How to Fix a Faulty Fridge Freezer

Dishwasher: 3 Potential Problems

A dishwasher can make your domestic life much easier, as you no longer have to spend hours standing over the kitchen sink washing dirty pots and pans. However, it is important that you understand how to spot signs that your dishwasher needs to be repaired or serviced. Below is a guide to some common problems which can affect dishwashers.

Corrosion

The metals used to manufacture your dishwasher are designed to be resistant to the effects of corrosion. However, minerals present in the public water supply and dishwashing detergents can cause some interior parts to eventually rust and corrode. If this occurs, it can lead to water leaking out of your dishwasher through rust holes in the bottom of the machine. You should regularly inspect the inside of your dishwasher for signs of corrosion. You should also check for signs of water underneath the appliance now and again, which is another tell-tale sign that corrosion may have damaged the dishwasher.

Worn gasket

The gasket is the rubber band around the edge of the dishwasher's door. This flexible strip of rubber is compressed when the door is closed. As the rubber gasket compresses, it forms a watertight seal which prevents water from leaking out when the appliance is in operation. However, with use, this rubber gasket can become brittle and hard. Eventually, it may crack, and this will prevent it from forming a watertight seal. You should regularly inspect the gasket on your dishwasher by gently pressing it with your finger or thumb. The gasket should feel soft and flexible. If it does not, it may be time to ask an appliance service to replace this component. If you do not replace a damaged gasket, you may find that water leaks out the side or bottom of the door when the appliance is in use.

Loose drain hose

The rubber hose fitted to the rear of your dishwasher carries wastewater out of the appliance and into your home's drainage system. However, over time, vibrations created by the dishwasher when it is in use can cause the hose to come loose. A loose hose will mean that water will leak out of the back of your dishwasher rather than being transported to the drain. A primary sign of a leaking drain hose is water pooling at the back of your machine and the dishwasher working inefficiently. An appliance service will be able to replace or reattach your drain hose.
